I7 2600k OC locked?

Hi,

I currently have a weird situation where I can't tell if my cpu overclocked properly. My suspicion come from the core speed and the multiplier info I get from CPU-Z.

I just wanted to overclock my cpu to get more out of it despite it's age even though it's still solid. All the drivers and bios are up to date. I do remember that the bios is different from back when I bought this computer. The "overclock I applied in the bios is supposed to affect the multiplier unless I am mistaken.

I also followed the general guidelines of this guide (actions I did are basically only changing the disable/enable stuff and the multiplier... didn't get to touch the voltage as it seems stable): http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/265056-29-2600k-2500k-overclocking-guide

Also worth mentionning that I did a factory reset in the bios and also used the jumped to reset the bios with the same result and also that the highest I could go while "overclocking is 6.3 Ghz as the bios won't let it go higher.

CPU: I7 2600k
Motherboard: MSI P67A-GD65
Cooling: Corsair liquid cooling forgot name (maybe h70?)
OS: Window 10

I am pretty much convinced that it is not running at 6.3 Ghz atm considering that from my search about this cpu people wouldn't / couldn't go that high without crashing.

Can you guys help me out on this and tell me if I am missing something or if everything is working properly?

Thx in advance!

I figured as much but yea, I was slowly increasing it but it still wouldn't reach crazy heat or crashing at any point, still monitoring everything atm to make sure nothing will fry but I feel like it is getting feed false info.

Also, the only change I noticed on CPU-Z when I was overclocking the cpu was the multiplier going from x34 to x34 (16-63) or x34 (16-*any multiplier I would put in bios).

Tried it, hard to say if the changes made really affected something besides maybe the heat?, I will turn it up a notch to see if it fixed it. The cpu-z is still showing x34 (16-63) and everything else is same.

I've only seen a 8700k go over 5jigahertz, it only hit 5.1 but after using it it degraded that much it could only hit 4.9 stable. Your mobo proably has a safe lock that won't let it go over a certain clock speed for your CPU's saftey, and your's.

I slowly kept increasing it and you are most likely right that it won't reach that but I still couldn't see a fluctuation at anything below 5 and even up so something is wrong.

Back up to 5Ghz atm, Temp is still <65C and still no crash. everything still display the same info basically but it feels like the heat has gone up. Will keep going up for a little bit to see if anything changes.

Found the issue, it was one of the power saving option in the advanced cpu menu which makes the cpu run slower during idle but for some reason even at full load it wouldn't change.

It could have been a bug not allowing it to run at full speed under load.
