So I ordered this ram as a gift for my friend and when i installed it, his computer would not turn on. I tried multiple slots and it wasn't the slots causing the problem because any slot i put HIS ram into alone the computer would start just fine.

So I took the ram home and plugged it into my computer and it would turn on but only recognized MY original 10GB and not the extra 8GB I just plugged in.

My motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4

Both me and my friends mother boards we of course 240pin

This is the exact ram and the exact link/seller I ordered it from. > https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00CA5FF2G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Solution
"ECC REGISTERED"

ECC memory provides error correction, and is designed for servers and other uses where memory errors need to be avoided at all costs. That tends to not be important for most consumer systems though, so consumer motherboards tend to not support ECC memory. When buying RAM, you need to make sure it's "non-ECC" unless you know for a fact that the motherboard supports it.

Solution
I agree with Paul.
Your MB supports DDR3 2800+(OC)/2400(OC)/2133(OC)/1866(OC)/1600/1333/1066 non-ECC, un-buffered memory.

Here is the MB QVL:
https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Extreme4/#Memory sellect a kit the size and frequency you desire in conjunction with your CPU. If you choose OC RAM then you may have to tweak your Bios and there is no guarantee they will work.

It is also advisable to check what your CPU will officially support when choosing the RAM kit.
