Planning to build my own system/first time.

So after a couple of years, and one of the RAM slots on my motherboard going defective, I've decided to try and build my own computer and replace the old one(i5 4440) instead of buying a prebuilt tower since components cost less. However, since its my first time I'm not sure if the components I picked out are the best bang for my buck or completely compatable and wanted to ask for the general opinion of others.

Currently the layout is looking like this:

CPU - Intel i7 8700
GPU - GTX 970
Motherboard - ASRock Z370M-ITX/ac mini ITX motherboard
(2 ram slots, bluetooth/Wi-Fi built in)
Case - Fractal Design R5 or S
RAM - Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB RAM
PSU- Corsair RMx 650w +Gold
Storage (for now) - Seagate 2TB 3.5" hybrid SSHD

The GPU is from my current computer so that's a huge cost savings given the market now, but I was wondering about the rest of the components and how well they'll get along.

I'm also on the look out for a cooler as I heard the one that comes with the CPU is more useful as a paper weight. Purchasing the components will most likely be spread out in case a non Z series motherboard is released that is compatable with the CPU though I figured at the price for the one listed it wouldn't be too big of a difference regardless.

you should buy a full ATX motherboard for the case size. mini itx is noticeably small. You can get the same connectivity with a pcie network card.

the stock coolers are okay at best. They're effective for locked cpu. Aftermarket coolers are either less noisy or keep the cpu colder. If you're getting an aftermarket cooler for a locked cpu, I'd use a noctua l9 x65.
