I've had my PC since 2015. The machine has been great, but sluggish recently with things like Photoshop, so I decided to upgrade my RAM from 16GB to 32GB.

I've installed the new RAM and run into a lot of issues, listed below. I'm not really too familiar when it comes to the technical side of computing, so my knowledge is quite limited.

Issue:

  • Installed two new 8GB sticks and getting "installed RAM: 24GB (16GB usable).
All 4 sticks in my machine are 8GB each (should be a total of 32GB). So the Computer is cutting two of the sticks in half in terms of RAM.
BIOS doesn't seem to have the option to access the RAM/Memory area to make amends (mentioned in trouble shooting).
Can't update BIOS as it's already up to date (according to Gigabyte site with the last update being 2013).

Hardware & OS

  • MOBOS: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 (rev5.0)
    CURRENT RAM: Corsair DDR3 16GB (2x8GB)
    New RAM:Ballistix Tactical 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 UDIMM
Processor: AMD FX-6350 Six core Processor 3.90Ghz
    OS: Windows 10 home 64bit

Already tried Troubleshooting options

  • I've tried sorting it out through boot (msconfig > boot > advanced options) and unchecked the "Maximum Memory" option.
I've tried the new sticks by themselves without the old RAM and it's saying they are 8GB each (16GB in total).
This is the BIOs Screen that comes up and I can't seem to find options mentioned in other sites on there (such as this one here
I've been trying to install the Gigabyte UEFI as well, but can't seem to find out how to actually download or install it.
As mentioned earlier, I'm a bit tech savvy, but really not too confident in what I'm doing, and don't really know what most of the BIOS things are.

Solution

It's called 1T/2T Command Timing,set at 2T,if possible.
Set "System Voltage Controll" to manual and set DDR3 Voltage to 1.65V.

What is the speed of the old ram? Sometimes if you have mix matched ram it will run at the lowest rated speed on all the sticks. Also you are aware that switching from dual channel ram to quad channel will produce slower results do to motherboards favoring dual channel ram.

The old RAM (Corsair) is PC3-12800k (800HMz)
New RAM (Crucial) PC3-10700 (667Mhz)

Does that display the speed?

No, if your Ram is running at 800mhz and 667 mhz you have a serious problem to fix, but its DDR3 and I don't think its possible. Try blowing any dust of the ram and ram slots then reinserting them.

with cpu-z and some older ram speed tester software it show ddr2 and faster ram at 1/2 speed. ie 1600 speed ram at 800. 1300 ram speed at 667. use cpu-z read the ram module info and google it. you want to use 1600 speed ram at 1.5v. also look at the ram stick you have if there one sidded ram you want to order one sidded ram. if there chips on both sided you want to get the same ram. older ddr3 ram there two voltages now the older 1.5 and the newer 1.35v low power ram. your mb will not like the newer low powered ram.

Are you using Coffelake? Just a guess considering the Intel joke for your Quote.

So what are my options then? I used Crucial to make sure the RAM I'm getting was correct for my machine, is it worth just sending back? The RAM works fine, but something is wrong in my machine.

I honestly have no idea on how to solve or even approach this problem :-/

With the original two sticks in manually set the Dram voltage to 1.65V and the command rate to 2T,also set 1333mhz first as speed, then add the new sticks again, test if this will work. Can all be done in the MIT section of the bios.

Might in the end well be that the sticks will not play together, explanation in the next artikel,

Look at "Just Adding More Dram".

You can always sell all the sticks you have and order a 32gb 4x8gb kit.

What would be the risk of doing this? If I'm increasing the voltage, even if it's only by 0.650, there must be some side effect?

It's possible there could be some system instability but very unlikely and the ram might produce more heat but nothing to be worried about.

"manually set the Dram voltage to 1.65V and the command rate to 2T,also set 1333mhz"

Okay, so I've found the section for the voltage, and it's already set to 133mhz. I can't see anything about the command rate though?

This is the BIOs that I have, nothing in the MIT seems to be "Command rate" or that I can see. Is this something that is renamed?

Not too confident in what I'm doing, so don't want to start changing numbers on the BIOS if they could be the wrong one.

Thank you SO much sir. Finally all 32GB are available! :D

You are a legend, thank you so much!

Nice! That's good to hear.:)

And you're welcome.:D

An afterthought, but you could try and set speed to 1600mhz,see if it will work, but that's up to you.
Would need to go into the bios again, the MIT,then change "Set Memory Clock" to manual and use x8.
Again it's up to you.Can understand that since all is working now you're happy with it. ;)
