Is my CPU dead? Getting BSODs all around

Hello,

Long story short - I'm casually browsing the web and all of a sudden my PC completely freezes and first thing I do is reboot. First few seconds into the desktop the mouse disappears and PC freezes again. This continues for a few more times until I start getting BSODs (DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) at random intervals, sometimes on desktop, sometimes on windows boot logo. I google the bsod title and every post says its either faulty driver or bad memory. I assumed it would be bad RAM because I didn't install anything new prior to these problem. After couple of hours I'm trying to boot with just the core components installed (CPU and RAM). No storage, no GPU, nothing else yet I'm still getting BSODs left and right when its trying to boot into windows or into automatic repair. I couldn't even get the minidumps as I couldn't stay a minute without a BSOD. Fast forward a few days and I get a new CPU (6600K) to try instead of my old 6700K and it boots without a problem on first try on the same Windows copy, same motherboard, same memory, same everything except the CPU. I still thought maybe its just some specific driver conflicting with my old CPU so I got a fresh OS copy and tried booting with my 6700K. Before I can even boot into the new window, BSOD. The BSODs also varied as I got an odd SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION or ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY from time to time. There were more that I can't remember at the moment. So it's 100% CPU fault at here and I'm wondering if anyone has ran into similar problems before.

Thanks in advance.

When I shipped the CPU back to Intel's RMA facility I did not use a box. I just placed the CPU in the anti-static plastic clamshell carrier package that it originally came in from the retail box. I then placed the plastic carrier package containing the CPU and the with appropriate documentation, that they asked for, into a bubble envelope and mailed it off to Intel's RMA handling facility. After the RMA handling facility received and inspected the processor they then shipped a new retail boxed processor back to me via UPS.

This what the plastic...

I used my friend's flash drive with windows on it. I didn't ask but I believe he got it with the media creation tool. I installed windows on my empty M.2 drive instead of the SSD where my old windows still is as I wanted for all of my files to remain. I did this all with just the M.2 in the rig and it still gave me BSODs with the old CPU.

Well, looks like I've just lost a lot of money since mine was second hand.. Thanks

If it is a retail boxed processor you can check its warranty status (i.e. Estimated Warranty Expiration date) through Intel's website. No proof of purchase is required for RMA.

https://supporttickets.intel.com/warrantyinfo

When looking for your FPO and visible ATPO numbers refer here for an example of where they are located on the processor:

If you own a retail boxed processor that is still within warranty you can initiate an RMA with Intel to get it replaced.

If the processor originally came from an OEM system (e.g. Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ... etc.) you're outta luck.

Thanks a lot! Looks like my CPU is indeed retail version, however I don't have the box for it. I contacted Intel support either way, hopefully they accept it. Appreciate your help
