Asus Z170-P motherboard with Samsung 960 EVO M.2 drive? Can't detect, please help!

Greetings, I can't get my motherboard to detect my new 250GB M.2 drive I have installed. In UEFI/BIOS, it just says 'empty' in the M.2 slot.

The motherboard's M.2 socket says NVMe 4x PCIe 3.0, and that's what the drive says. So, why won't it detect?

Anyone had any luck with this? Or is the drive incompatible with the Asus Z170-P for some lame reason?

Thanks!

First, check the mobo manual. If you have another drive plugged into the sata0 and/or sata1 ports, it may conflict withe the M.2 port (they may be running on the same sata ports). Second, check the Asus site for bios updates. Any relating to NVMe?

Tried everything in BIOS. The M.2 position still says 'empty'. I'm running Win7 x64 from my normal SATA SSD, but the M.2 drive can't be accessed.

In device manager, a new device just called "PCI Device" shows up, but has no drivers. I haven't been able to install the Samsung drivers because... it says the device isn't installed!!!

I can't even install the Win7 Hotfix for NVMe drives because... it also says a device isn't installed!

How on Earth am I supposed to install drivers to detect the device, if they can't be installed before the @#?!! device is detected?!

This driving me nuts.

Mobo manual is mostly a vague joke :)

There are no SATA 0 or 1 ports available, the 4 ports on the mobo are all labelled SATA 3 to 6. I'd suspect the first ones are reserved for the M.2 drive socket.

No BIOS updates available, I have the latest BIOS.

Thanks for helping out guys, I appreciate this, but it looks like it's gonna be a pain in my arse for a while. Apparently, NVMe drives don't show up in BIOS or are accessible in Windows until a system partition is created, so I guess I'm SOL until I figure out how to install the Hotfixes for Windows 7 to enable NVMe support.

OK, I finally got it going! Nothing worked until I stumbled across the Windows 7 Hotfix for NVMe drives, KB2990941.

Worked fine after that! Booted up my machine on my trusty ol' SATA SSD, and there she was in Disk Manager! Formatted the drive and away we go. Thanks for helping out everyone, but I got 'er going.

Man, are these things ever faaaast! 3267 MB/s read, 1601 MB/s write! So, about 10 times faster than my SATA SSD.

And holy smokes, do they ever get hot! :)

I had Windows Updates disabled... After re-enabling it and installing the hotfix, it was all good :) Windows 10 has the NVMe support built in, with Win7 it's a little more finicky.

Peace
