Is my graphics card fried?

Hey everyone

I was playing playing a game when artifacts started appearing, neat patterns and lines

It happened several times over a 24 hours period to the point where my pc reset and would only show a black screen when booting windows.

I look the card out and gave it a good clean after noticing it was jam packed with dust but it still won't boot.

However it seems to work when booting in safe mode, is part of the hardware fried? Or is it possibly a driver issue

Obviously it's the worst time to be buying a new GPU, it was however the plan as this one is 5 years old now

Thanks

Solution
In safe mode the GPU drivers aren't loaded so the GPU works in a compatibility mode and isn't stressed as hard. Your symptoms point to a possible GPU failure from overheating and perhaps ageing. However in order to be certain you have to do some tests.

1)You need to test your system with another PSU in order to rule out a possible PSU failure.
2)Test your GPU in another system. That way you'll find out whether the GPU is responsible or something else in your system.

Finally please post your complete system specs as it will help us give you more accurate advice. Good luck.

Hello thanks for the reply

I was going to make the jump to a RX 580 when they released but held off, now they are 3x the price :/

Full specs are

I5 3570k cpu

MSI HD 7850 2gb gpu

16gb DDR3 1600 ram

256 SSD

2Tb HDD

Cooler master v650 PSU (which is by far the newest component, from 2016)

The GPU is probably dead but do the 2 tests that I mentioned above just to be sure. You don't want to get a new GPU and then find out that you have a faulty PSU. Good luck.

After a reinstall of windows 10 it's seems, for the time being, to be back from the dead

Spoke to soon, as soon as I tried to install the drivers it gave up again

Lucky for me it's the best time to be buying a new gpu......
