Hi, i just upgraded from hdd to ssd. I still want to keep my hdd to store some games and large files because it has a lot more cappacity than my ssd.
I bought the samsung 850 EVO and i have seen some tutorials on how to setup your ssd but im a little lost because is my first ssd.
Usually it takes like 2-3 mins to boot windows on my hdd so how can i boot windows faster using my ssd without deleting my data or reinstalling again windows?
I heard that you can use samsung magician to transfer your files, but is this true? Because i dont want to mess my data.
thanks

How much consumed space? Presumably below 400GB?

If so...this:
Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect...

2 options:

1. Clean install of the OS (and your applications) on the SSD>
More work, but this always works

2. Clone from the old drive to the new SSD.
This requires that the total used space on the HDD be significantly smaller tan the new SSD.
This usually works.

1. What size is the new SSD
2. How much total space is consumed ont he HDD?
3. What, exactly, constitutes that used space?

Hi USAFRet,
1.My new ssd is 500 gb
2.my current hdd is 1TB and it has only 84.3 GB left.
3. And most of the space are games. I only want to move my os and maybe a couple of games of apps that take some time to load.
thanks

3. You can't move "some of it". A couple of the cloning applications let you leave off stuff like videos/pics/etc.
Other than that, everything goes.

Do you have (or can borrow) another drive? Maybe an external with a lot of free space?

So...to clone into this 500GB SSD, you need the actual used space to be below 400GB.
Given that, it will work.

Time for a cleanup...:)
Delete a bunch of old junk you no longer need.
Find your SteamApps folder. How large is it? If it will fit on the 250GB drive, copy that whole thing to that. We can move it around later.
Or even move some of the games to that drive. Like this:
To move an already installed game
Games library
Right click the game
Properties
Local Files
Move Install Folder

Remember...400GB is your magic number. Once you get there, we can go into detail about the cloning process.
(but for now...I'm out. It's midnight...:) )

When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the 450MB Recovery Partition, here:

Thanks, I think is working. I reconnected my old HDD to a different port and now my C: is on my ssd. I have one more question, how do i use my old hdd because on disc utility it says no conexion on the hdd and that there is a firm confliction.

What do you mean by "no connection"? What is telling you this?

You've verified that the system boots from the SSD and only the SSD?

Yes, i completly disconnnected my hdd and i was able to run the os just fine from the ssd. The message that im getting on disck utility is "The disk is offline because it has a signature collision with another disk that is online"

Ah.
What tool did you use for this cloning operation?
What tool is telling you about the collision?

For the cloning operation i used Samsung Data Migration and the windwos 10 disk management (in the computer management tool) is the one that is telling me about the collision.

It says that is online and correct. And i can see it as an E folder, but it has the same content as my ssd.

OK, no problem.

Right click, and delete each partition
Leaving one large blank space.
Right click and format that space
Give it a drive letter..
