SSD compatibility with old motherboard

I am having issues installing a new SSD to my motherboard. I recently got a 'Samsung 960 EVO' for my birthday and am trying to install it. I had to purchase a PCIe x16 to m.2 adapter so I could hook the SSD up my motherboard. However when I try and install windows to the SSD I come up with an error where windows can't install to this storage device.

This is the error:
"windows cannot be installed to this disk the computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk".

I have tried switching from IDE to AHCI but that doesn't change the error. I suspect that it is my motherboard that isn't compatible with booting from this SSD from a PCIe slot but I am not sure.

If anyone can confirm this for me, or even help me figure out why I can't boot from this new SSD I would be very grateful.

My motherboard is: gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3

Solution

Run disk part, then list disk, then select disk * where * is your evo, then run clean, then run format fs=ntfs quick, then create partition pri, and then try installing again

I see, that's quite unfortunate. Is there a way to update my legacy BIOS into UEFI? or would I just have to upgrade my motherboard into something newer?

Thanks for the help

No, i don't think there is any way of upgrading your BIOS to UEFI. I have read that you could boot from a PCIe adapter if you use a Samsung 950 Pro SSD. Samsung went through extra effort to make this -- and only this -- generation of SSD's bootable on legacy BIOS. IT works because Samsung put an OROM (Option ROM) on the 950 Pro. The OROM is what makes the drive bootable.
