I was using a wifi adapter plugged directly to the mobo. It got me decent speeds for quite some time, but it suddenly went down from about 20 MB to some speed low enough that I couldn't even load a page to check it. I restarted the modem and then tried with a wired connection and it was fine, so I swapped the Wifi adapter for a USB one and it's giving me good speeds. What could have caused this sudden drop in speed? It was catching the signal fine as well, so it's not a matter of distance or interference.

Solution
can be two issues. one windows installed an older driver for the ubs wifi stick or chipset drivers. the other is malware on your rig. from another pc download to a usb stick malware bytes and hitman pro and updated drivers for usb stick and the mb chipset drivers. uninstall the wifi usb drivers and install the newest ones. reinstall the mb chipset drivers see if the speed goes back. if not run malware scan if it clean. check with the wifi software see if someone near your home turned on there own wifi on and it on the same channel and has the same hardware or close to the same isp hardware. if they did you could have cross talk slowing down your wifi. go into the router and change the default channel to one that not used.
