Hey everyone, any retro fans? :)

I'm trying to upgrade an old amd phenom ii x4 965 to a less old i3 3220. The change is only swapping the motherboard and processor from one working system to another. I want to keep everything else on the amd as it is - PSU, GPU, ram, etc.

When I did the switch, the new system does not boot. PSU and CPU fans does not turn on. After pressing the power button, the two fans only twitch from time to time.

I disconnected and remove everything from the i3 motherboard but the CPU and its fan and plugged it first to its original PSU(atx-500 power box) and after that to the AMD system PSU(epsilon 80plus 600). With the original PSU everything works, with the one from the amd system - nothing.

I did the same on the amd system - with both PSU the older system boots up without a problem.

I need to use the epsilon PSU, since the ATX-500 has no PCI connector for the GPU.

Any ideas?

Update: Seems like a strange PSU problem. "project" cancelled, case closed.

I'm trying to get the Asus p8h61 to work.

When testing setup with the Asus + i3, only the atx-500 works.

Not sure what the amd motherboard is, but on it both PSU work

The Intel board may need a BIOS update to support the 3220.

Look at the sticker on the mobo. The last 4 numbers on it have to be 4013 or above to support it

Core i3-3220 (3.3G,L3:3M,iGPU,2C,rev.E1) ALL 4013

Whatever the last 4 numbers are (if theyre under 4013), you'll have to find a CPU that version supports first

So you can update the BIOS

That may have been the case if the I3 was in something else. Just because it worked in something else, doesnt mean it'll work on the mobo you posted. Unless BIOS 4013 is on the mobo now it's not going to work

They worked together. Basically I took 2 working PCs. Ripped the i3 with its mobo from one and placed it in the other. The i3 was working with the exact same motherboard I have now issues getting to work. Not the same model but the exact same - I have not even disconnected the CPU fan cable from the motherboard when doing the switch.

On top of this if I tried to undo the change - stick the i3+asus into its original setup - everything works. Even more - if I stick the amd and its motherboard in the i3 original setup - everything works. The only thing that does not work is what i'm trying to do :)

I'm probably doing a very simple/stupid mistake...but can't seem to see it.

A small update: I decided that since the mobos and PSU were connected for over 4-5 years, probably dust accumulated in the pins. I tried to clean them up a bit and gave a bit of a nudge when re-connecting the epsilon to the Asus p8h61.

When I powered the mobo+cpu+PSU, the fans started rotating for about 30-40 seconds and after that they stopped. Without doing anything they re-started in another 5 seconds - ran for 30-40 sec and again stopped. This repeated several times until the setup was dead once again. As the fans were rotating, the PSU fan rpm were very unstable - they went up to probably max and down all the time during the 30-40 second period of "working fans".

I'll try to clean-up the pins a bit more and see what will happen.

Final update to close the topic. I've managed to get an exact same mobo+i3(an IT firm that retires its old PCs). tested it with the epsilon PSU and the same strange PSU fan rpms and no booting happened.

Seems like either the PSU is somehow incompatible or somehow broken.

Thanks for trying to help Paul!
