Question about the 8700k

I have a 8700k and a m.2 Nvme 960 pro. I'm under the impression that the 8700k has 24 pci express lanes. I'm using 16 for my graphics card and 4x for my 960 pro, GPU Z and other programs such as Nvidia control panel verify that I using 16 lanes for my GPU.

What is confusing is the official intel site says that this processor has 16 pci express lanes. I'm assuming the Z370 chipset has the additional lanes? Does anybody know the exact breakdown?

Solution
The 8700k has 16. Z370 has 24. That's a total of 40 lanes. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/chipsets/desktop-chipsets/z370.html You might find a specific block diagram for your mobo on google, otherwise there is just the general one.

The pcie x16 slot is wired to the cpu. It can't be used for anything else. Any other slots use the chipset lanes. If the mobo has other x16 slots, the cpu could be wired to them but it is never wired to nvme, only to x16 slots. You can see this in the block diagram as it only states graphics connected to the cpu. The block diagram for you mobo will show how it's wired to its other slots. Z97 has less lanes but you can see the block diagram for it as well.

Thanks K1114, I get it I checked out the z97 diagram and the max chipset lanes is 8x...

I get it !
