How do I recover data from an old laptop HDD?

Okay, so let me elaborate first!

My old Lenovo Laptop got stuck in an infinite recovery loop. Not long ago I picked up an HP Pavilion Power Desktop 580-023w to hold me over. Upon inspection I noticed there was an extra power cable floating around inside, so I disconnected the SATA cable from the CD Drive since I don't use it, mounted the 2.5 Drive from my laptop, and connected it via the sata and power cables.
The drive is recognized and all partitions are healthy, etc.

I want to wipe/ format the drive so its completely clean, however since I had no way to back up any of my files before the laptop ate dirt, I was hoping I could recover some of the files before formatting it.
(Attempting to open the drive says I need to format first before using it.)

Is there a way I can do that, simply with it installed in the desktop?
...or do I need one of those stupid ATA to USB adapters?

I guess Windows first has to properly recognize the drive before you can attempt to recover its contents. But if I were you I'd look for an HDD recovery cd/usb stick program and boot with it to recover the files.

Here are some of those you could use:

    http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/

    http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

And I find this one the easiest way to do what you want:

    https://www.easeus.com/resource/hard-disk-data-recovery.htm

Good luck and let us know what happens!
