Do I really need to install TIM in a vertical line on an i7 8700k?

Saw on Arctic Silver's website that you're supposed to do that because of the core arrangement. I'm of the opinion that putting it in a pea/lentil sized dot in the middle is the way to go...

Solution
it's an age old question and the 'right' answer depends on a lot of factors. But a Pea sized dot it a solid method. Every application method has it's own upside downside and different people will swear by different methods. I use either pea or line.

It'll work fine as long as you cover most of it with it. There's a video on youtube that proves that there's no difference between application methods, unless you apply too little.
