Motherboard Failure (I think)

Using a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H with an Intel i5-4670K. Was away on deployment when my wife told me my computer stopped working around the end of December. Got home earlier this week to figure out what happened.

Did a swap of the power supply and the CPU. Tried booting with (and without) the RAM, with (and without) peripherals plugged, same with GPU. All gave me the same result: after pressing the power button it would start to boot but then restart after 1 second. Observing the power supply's fan, it would barely move. I assumed it was the power supply, so I swapped it when my wife's power supply, and it would not work.

Before I get another mobo, I wanted to run this by the community for input/tricks up their sleeves. Any advice for an affordable replacement? That board cost me $150 new when I got it in Dec 2013, replacement boards that I took a quick look at were around $200-$400. A little crazy. Any help is appreciated.

Yeah in that case it's very likely your mobo. Those rarely just go though. Typically some sort of electrical issue, or opening case up and touching it (static discharge) causes it, or even other faulty components which then damage the mobo downstream. For it to just fail is rare. Is it still within warranty? Cause that would be a definite case for an rma.

When you say you swapped in your wife's power supply and it would not work, do you mean no signs of life at all? No fan on psu spinning at all, no other fans in the case on, no lights on mobo?
Are the wattages on your psus similar?

Any PSU connected to the mobo would not turn over. When connected to my wife's mobo, everything worked fine. There were lights on the mobo to show power was getting to it, but that's about it. One PSU is 750, the other is 700.

Huh. I'd think psu would still turn on unless there's an issue with the power button signal itself, not even getting to the psu in the first place...which could be the case. But you say with your psu it does kind of start up but then restarts.
One thing, are both computers in the same room? Same power bar (or wall plug)? Just double check plugging yours in her room, rather than in whatever wall plug you've been using for yours. It's probably nothing, but wiring is an issue more commonly than you'd expect, and you just want to quickly rule it out.
If you plug your psu into your wife's computer, does it work fine?

I did my test in the kitchen (no carpet) using the same outlets for both. My PSU and her PSU work fine when using her mobo, but not when using mine. It's leading me to think that its the mobo that's done.

Unfortunately warranty expired in 2016.

Well, thanks for the help. With board prices being so high, I'll go without a gaming rig for a little while then maybe buy a laptop - unless I can stick my 4670k in a LGA 1151, which I don't think I can. Thanks again.

before you rule out the mb as the issue. pull the mb from the case to rule out a dead short use just onboard video and one ram stick. also try clearing the cmos see if anti surge kicked in. i would see online if there any mb repair shops. most mb if they fail like yours it a failed vrm. finding the right one that failed and having the skill to replace board level chips shop you need to find. if not sell the cpu and pick up a newer mb and cpu.

Pulled the mobo out and tried running it up just as you said, same issue. The LED lights for M Bios and B Bios but thats it, it recycles after that.
