Trying to build a gaming PC fr my son. All he plays is csgo, pubg nd Minecraft. I already have one GTX 970 from my old build. Processor is an old i7 960. So should I get a used 970 nd run it in SLI or should I purchase a brand new 1070..1070 goes fr around $700-900 though nd my budget is $400

Solution

Here is some evidence that SLI is not supported all that well these days:

an i7 960 would be unable to keep up with a 1070 or sli 970's

most games also do not support sli, or it is broken

an i7 960 + a gtx 970 is a balanced build once the cpu is overclocked a bit

Next person that says most games don't support sli needs to be slapped. 80% of my library supports sli very well. Thats a 300 game library, Almost all AAA games support it.

It's with newer titles that we are seeing less support (or less well optimised support) for SLI/Crossfire/m-GPU.

However, as the OP is already running an SLI system, I think we can assume that they know +/-'s of an m-GPU setup with regards to compatability.

OK, i'm calling that out, evidence please:

OP a single 970 would be plenty in my opinion, i'm getting decent frames in 1440p when i get round to gaming .

Yeah I agree. No point going higher than a gtx970 when using a first gen i7.

The cpu would 100% be a bottleneck in newer games when using SLI 970s or a 1070.

I would be tempted to put the money towards a new cpu/mobo/ram and run with one 970 for now.

You can search for more wide spread testing. Basically, SLI can help, but these days, it doesn't help as often as we used to. DX12 and Vulkan games are the worst.

Excellent answer, thanks for that.

Who would have guess you picked the 1080ti's

I will agree 1080ti's is horrid for sli, Unless you are running multiple 4k monitors.

I chose that, because it had the best listing. You can focus on the 4K results, but you can see, even with 4K results, a lot of games had 0 improvement, although most the 0's were actually lost DPS. The 0's were a matter of SLI simply not being supported at all.

For the most part, SLI and CF are a high end GPU thing.

Hi vexicus , there is one other option , your motherboard is a 1366 pin , correct ? What I did was go to a Xeon W3680 6 core CPU, your board will except it no problem , in stock configuration it boosted from 2.70 GHz to 3.33 GHz without overclocking. I'm running 2 GTX 970 strix 4 gig in SLI with no problems. Been running it for over 6 months , even with the two cards there is no heating troubles. I hope this late post helps.
