PC shuts down (fans keep spinning, power button stops working) EDIT: ATX 12V BLACKENED

Hello guys.

I have been a fan of this forum for learning purposes for a long time now and lately -sadly- I've been needing help.

As the title says, my pc started shutting down randomly, while the fans keep spinning and I can't turn it off using the power button, I need to re-plug the PSU cable or press that button.

At the beginning it used to happen while playing games (Heroes of the Storm, my pc always handled it perfectly), then started doing it at random moments, sometimes even won't boot after it... Seemingly random behaviour...

Some days ago my dad helped me change the PSU fan, which was emitting strange noises and the PSU even started to smell weird (no smoke though). After changing the fan, PSU is back to normal (and not heated at all), but the problem persists.

3.3, 5V and 12V voltage is fine... Almost no variance there...

I don't really have the spare cash to spend on a huge repair or a new expensive part so I don't really know how to find the one that does this.

I will gladly answer everything I'm able to about the issue. Please, if you know anything about it, help me.

Thank you all.

You likely have a hardware problem. I'd check your CPU and GPU (if applicable) temps and tell us what they are. You may be overheating. Those are the only 2 things that cause instant shutdowns.

- PSU fan changes won't help you will power supply issues. It is also very dangerous to open a power supply and never recommended unless you are trained. If you touch the big capacitors without discharging them properly you can be shocked badly. Even unplugged the PSU retains dangerous amounts of electricity. You have no way of knowing if the PSU is good or not without swapping it out.

- The issue could be another part like your motherboard or your graphics card (if applicable).

My advice? If you are not overheating and if you don't have spare parts, then pay a shop just for diagnostic. When they tell you which part is failing and then save up to replace that part.

Hello and thank you jr9.

My temps are in the 40s-55s on idle on CPU, and around 40 on the GPU. Can't post a photo because the pc doesn't last on for that long right now...

Can it be overheating if sometimes the PC doesn't even beep and boot? And sometimes it closes as soon as I enter the desktop.

I will try swapping out my Corsair CX 750 with a friends and see if there is a change in the behaviour.

By the way, what does it mean that a GPU is applicable?

Tyvm!!!

I mentioned overheating as it's the other thing that can cause complete and instant shutdowns besides hardware issues. If you are seeing temps under 60C for CPU and GPU at the time the PC shuts down then you don't have an overheating issue. So lets move on. Most likely things that can cause what you are describing are in order of probability:

1. Failing GPU. If you have integrated graphics on or another graphics card, try using it. It can quickly identify the GPU as the issue. If you do not know if you have integrated graphics, give you CPU and motherboard name.

2. Failing PSU

3. Failing Motherboard

4. Failing RAM or CPU, although this generally manifests itself in BSOD

Sorry for the late reply, but the pc didn't want to turn on, today I disconnected and reconnected everything and managed to make it work.

I will try tomorrow to swap some parts with a friends, and see if this continues, try to isolate the problem maybe...

I've been seeing A HUGE temperature oscillation on my CPU. Goes from 30 to 60 celsius on idle without background processes or anything. I don't know when the pc is going to shut down again like it used to do. But that temperature thing looks weird to me.

I will check the 4 things you told me and come back -hopefully with an answer-

Thank you very much... If someone knows anything about that cpu temp oscillation... it looks weird to me that it goes up so hard without any processes being run...

Well, the best way to find out if your CPU has integrated graphics: is it an Intel processor from the list below?

Intel Celeron, Intel Atom, Intel Pentium, Intel Xeon, Intel Core M, Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7.

If I missed any let me know. The only Intel CPU I know that has no integrated graphics is Intel's Core i9.

Okay, I have made some important advances, and here is what I found:

About the smell coming from the PSU, I think that was because of the atx 12v connector. For some reason, I checked on it and saw both atx12v connectors fried (the one on the mobo and the PSU cable).

So now I'm using the other one, since there were 8 pins that go in groups of 4. Now whenever I somehow connect it right it stays perfect for long hours, but if it doesn't connect well... it stays on for maybe a couple of minutes and shuts down. Doesn't matter if I'm watching a movie, playing, working, etc.

What I really don't know is if the problem is my PSU, my MOBO, or both. Is there any way to find out?

Thanks guys. I'm so glad it's finally coming to an end.

I just went ahead and bought a new PSU 3 days ago. So far so good, the computer seems to be working as before.

I still couldn't find out if it was an issue with the ATX cable (since they were a bit blackened - as was the socket -) or the PSU itself was just dying, the poor thing.

Anyway, I hope this problem doesn't show again.

Thank you so much for your time jr9 and woahwoahwilly. You guys make this community so good.

Hope this solution helps somebody some day.

See you and good luck!
