Hi everyone, it's been a while since I've posted here. I have a desktop that I finally got around to upgrading it with (this is embarrassing) SSD drives. That did get my upgrading juices flowing, so I'm already thinking of my next upgrade, which will probably be CPU and motherboard.

With that being said, I'm looking into getting an Intel i5-8400 and a corresponding motherboard, and that's where I need some advice. From my research, it looks like I'll need a Z370 motherboard, and as you will see, I don't need the latest bells and whistles; my needs are much more modest. Here's the information that I have:

Approximate Purchase Date: within 2 weeks

Budget Range: Less than $300 (not including CPU)

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Internet usage, gaming, movie watching

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: Looking to upgrade: CPU (i5-8400) and mother board

Parts kept the same: power supply (Antec BP550), memory (4 HyperX DDR3 1600), video card (Radeon 6850 HD PCIe x16), X-Fi PCI Sound card (not married to that, from what I heard, on-board has caught up nicely), 2 SSD drives & 1 HHD drive (SATA 6 all three), 3 3-pin fans

Do you need to buy OS: No (i think)

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg, Amazon

Location: Miami, FL, US

Parts Preferences: None, as long as it' a respectable brand

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: two monitors at 1920x1080

Additional Comments: Not looking for bleeding cutting edge, looks, or unnecessary features. Dependability, compatibility, and ease of install/use is most important for me.

Let me know if I forgot to include any information. Any and all advice/feedback is most welcome.

I completely missed that fact, thanks. I did happen to find a few Z170 boards that would take the CPU and keep my memory, but I wonder if DDR4 plus the Z370 would make that much more of a difference than a Z170 with my current memory.

UPDATE: Yeah, after some more research, it looks like DDR3 is basically dead. Man, am I behind the times. I found a few good DDR4 kits for under $100, so it's not the end of the world. Moving forward, I'm fully expecting to upgrade the memory as well.

You should be fine, since the 8400 cannot be overclocked, you dont really need a higher priced mobo.
