I am building a budget build and want to know what CPU would be best. Here are my current parts:

  • GPU: EVGA Gtx 1050 ti ssc 4gb
    Motherboard: MSI B350 Tomahawk
    Ram: PNY Anarchy 8gb
    Storage: WD 1tb Blue
    PSU: Corsair VS 500w
    OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit
Thank you for helping!

It depends on what you want to use it for.
If high settings, 1080p gaming, then the R 1400, with at least a 1060 6gb graphics card - prices are dumb right now, so I'd say wait on getting one.
Just about everything else, go for the 2200g. You can also game on this, but mainly limited to low-mid settings.

EDIT: do you already have those parts? Because the motherboard in question will need a bios update with a current Ryzen cpu to even use the 2200g. Otherwise, you're going to have to wait for the 400 series boards.

I am mainly going to use it for gaming. I already have the motherboard (Got it for $50, new) and will work on the bio update. I was planning to sell the 1050ti and find a 1060 when the price go down. thank you for the help.

If you already have the board and you above, skip the 2200g. Get the 1400 or higher. The 2200g is an apu, meaning it has graphics built into the CPU itself. Your 1050ti is far more powerful than the built in graphics.

The 2200g is also only a quad core, the 1400 is a quad core with smt(think hyperthreading), meaning it acts like an 8 core CPU. However, that said, really, I would try to go higher and get at least a ryzen 5 1600. Which is a 6 core with smt. So it acts like a 12 core essentially.

As far as the GPU, especially if you are only playing at 1080p, unless you are loaded right now, I would try to save up and see if you can wait out the mining craze. It stands to reason the bottom will drop out sooner or later and that cards will get cheap again. Plus in a few months we may see new cards released anyway.

The other upgrade you could do in the mean time, get an SSD drive for your boot drive. I have a Samsung Evo nvme SSD drive, 250gb, I think at the time it was about 115 dollars. Installs into a shot directly on the motherboard. Boot time, wow, about 15 seconds from hitting the power button to being on the desktop. Programs load up quick etc. Then I use my 1tb drive as storage for installing other programs like games and stuff because once a game is loaded you shouldn't see as much difference. But there SSD is nice for when you are just using the system in general imo.

I am building this with the idea of upgradeable but in the budget of under $500, In the near future, I will definitely get a sdd, better graphics card and 8gb+ more ram. last things I will upgrade will be the motherboard and cpu because it should be enough for the time being but will in the later future. thank you for your help.
