Recently started playing through Rise of the Tomb Raider again. Played it before on this same computer. Only this time it crashes my whole PC and restarts it. There is no error message or warning. First time it got to a point where it crashed within moments of launching the game I uninstalled and reinstalled the game. Second time I restarted the game again and it played fine for a while then it crashed on a static menu screen.

Again, I've played the entire game before on THIS PC without issue and I get no error message and it has crashed on a static screen and busy quick time moment of combat.

I run my games on an SSD, Windows 8.1 with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960.

Thoughts?
Please answer for a laymen. I'm not super familiar with the inner workings of a PC, a friend built mine for me.

Can you give your max GPU and CPU temps? You can find them in a program like Furmark, OCCT, HWInfo You can also use OCCT or Furmark to stress test the graphics card or CPU.

It sounds like either the graphics card is overheating, physically failing, or the driver is completely unloading.

Lets make sure it's really not drivers. Use Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode to completely wipe all drivers. Select clean+restart, remove everything including GeForce Experience if applicable. Then boot into normal Windows and reinstall the GPU driver again. Only install the driver and PhysX, uncheck everything else and leave out GeForce Experience. Restart and see if the crashing stops. If this doesn't work then it's not drivers.

AMD Quad-Core processor, 3.80 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 64-bit OS.

This is the first game I've had a problem with. Just played Skyrim for a while to test it and had no problems.

Disable automatic restart on system failure.
Next time this happens, you'll get blue screen with description about the problem.
Control Panel/System/Advanced System Settings/Advanced/Settings/System Failure/Automatically Restart

So my computer was up to date, graphics card had one update which I installed and now it's doing something a little funny. The game will still crash my whole computer with no error message or warning or consistency but now it doesn't restart or even really turn off. The game crashes, the screen goes black, my second monitor shows "no signal" but I can still hear my computer is on and the light on my tower that says the motherboard is working or whatever is still flashing. It stays that way and responds to nothing so I am forced to push the restart button on my tower.
