how can I find out if a laptop has a Windows 10 licence, without installing Windows 10...?

I am fixing a laptop for a friend, where Windows 10 had become corrupted. Ultimately this meant re-installing from the recovery partition, which has installed Windows 7, as originally supplied.

So my question is - before I go and put Windwos 10 Home back on it, is there any way I can tell it actually has a licence to run Windows 10...?

I don't want to install Windows 10 if it then won't activate....

... the point is, I don't want to install Windows 10 without the licence since that will mean over-writing Windows 7, and I'll have to go through the whole process of installing (and updating) that all over again

In short, I want to find out if this laptop has a Windows 10 licence BEFORE I install it

...?

EXCELLENT thank you I had not thought of that - will give it a go

Lots of folks have the sense not to have a Microsoft account so that might not fly.

Go ahead and install it anyway. If it was a genuine Windows 7 system which was upgraded to 10 when it was on the free offer, there will be a tattoo somewhere that causes it to activate.

I've done it several times and only failed once where they lied about having a non-legitimate copy of Windows 10.

Yeah I know it'll work if it is all legit - it is CHECKING it is all legit that I'm interested in - don't wanna waste time/money if it aint gonna work

As it turns out, the device in question IS listed in friend's Windows account - so all should go fine..... :)
