So, long story short, my 980ti died, and I'm stuck with an old gtx 690.

Unfortunately, this card uses 2x8pin. I have a Corsair HX850i, which comes with a bunch of 6+2 pcie connectors, but unfortunately I only have one on hand (the one I was using for my 980ti. The extra cables that came bundled with the PSU are at my house, a good 5 hour drive away from me (currently at university).

Since this PSU uses proprietary connectors, the only solution I have is to buy the extremely expensive cable from corsair, and have it shipped. I'd rather wait two weeks and get my OEM cables from home.

All the folks asking this question on other forums are usually using cheap <=500w non-modular supplies that would be shaky at best even with the right connectors, and the response is usually "buy a better PSU," which doesn't apply in my case.

In that interim period, will I be relatively safe using the 6 pin to 8 pin? the PSU itself can surely handle that load, so the question comes down to the ability of such an adapter to handle the power draw without getting too hot.

Do you have extra molex or sata power connectors from PSU available?
You could make another 6pin pcie from 2x molex or 2x sata power connectors.
Then 2x 6pin connectors would make 1x 8pin pcie.

Normally, I would have access to a complete set of cables that came with the PSU, so I never had any need for such adapters.

I don't have any on hand, but I can see if I can source them locally.

I don't know if I have enough available molex/sata connections (4) in order to do this configuration, as well.
