Cooling options for a fx6300

I took my years old build and put it in a bit fenix nova case for my partner to use however the cpu is running super hot (idle at 45-60 and hits 75-80 under basic use) compared to when it was in my CM Storm Enforcer case. Since the nova doesnt have as big of a front mesh and no top exhaust i was looking at putting a CM Hyper 212 on the cpu to cool it however i'm not sure that this will cool the cpu enough with only a single rear exhaust and the dual 120 front intakes.

I am wanting to know if i should get a cooler case or the cpu cooler to tackle this issue? Or should I look at water cooling the cpu if thats a cheaper option?

Thank you, Grant :)

Hmmm. Water Cooling shouldn't be necessary in any case unless you are overclocking. Have you recently taken off the heatsink? 60c at idle is pretty toasty tho. If I were you, I would try reapplying thermal paste, and see if that impacts the temps at all. It may be bad thermal contact causing the heat problems. If reapplying thermal past does not help, that Hyper 212 you suggested is never a bad option, provided it fits in the case.

Does the build currently have a stock cooler installed?(one that came with the processor for free) or it already an aftermarket cooler? Don't bother replacing one aftermarket cooler with another. As long as it is not the stock cooler it should be adequate for a 6300.

What is the load on the CPU according to task manager at Idle? I am still curious what is causing the abnormally high thermals. What monitoring software are you using to check temps?

Stock cooler and I know most amds are really hot hence why im worried. it has stock cooler and ran fine in my case but in this new case for my partner its rather hot.

There are several things you can try:

  • reapply thermal paste.
    ramp up the case fans
make a decision about investing $30-50 into a case or a CPU cooler
Coolers that would fit the bitfenix case and perform better then the 212 :
Scythe Mugen 5
Scythe Fuma

If you remove the side panel and the temps return to normal, you can keep the AMD cooler for sure.

If you hold on to a glass side panel, look for the Enermax GraceMesh, or get an old school case like the Fractal Design Focus G or Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-01 !

Bulldozer and Piledriver processors do run hot, but not that hot. Try what zoltan.boese suggested. Removing the side panel should eliminate the case as the source of the problem. If the your still seeing high temps at idle with the side panel off, it has something to do with the cooler and the case is likely fine.

Was the cooler removed from the socket when you transferred the board into the new case? If so it probably has something to do with thermal contact (clould be too much paste or too little, or it may be mounted without making perfect contact). Have you tried removing the thermal paste and re-applying yet? I assume you ensured all case fans are plugged in and working in the new case, correct?
