Question about resolutions.

I'd like to have myself as someone well familiar with hardware since I've built a couple good configurations but I will ask a stupid question about resolutions.

That is something that has always evaded me.

How much a role does resolution play when you are gaming, because since I remember I always used 1280x800,and now years later(probably 8-9) I still play at that resolution despite running a GPU that can do a lot more than that.

Its just an old habit, but should I bump the resolution up, am I wasting GPU power by running it that low?

My monitor is 22 inch

Solution
Smaller screens can get away with with lower resolutions (phones are an excellent reference). Larger screens however will get blurry with lower resolutions, to the point modern games can look almost like a PS2-era remnant. If you play on a windowed screen, try resizing it while in-game to 25% of the full size. The image will look sharper.

The higher the resolution, the more detail. Try bumping your resolution up. You'll get to see what you have been missing.

look at monitor recommended. 1280 on 1920 will look worse than 1280 on 1280 screen. In general keeping same resolution as monitor will work best, is a good idea. If you see no performance drop and/or youre fine with how game looks, there is no "WASTE" here.
We're not standing behind guys running minesweeper on threadripper builds, yelling about wasted hardware ... :)

My monitor can go to 2560x1440 as it says and I'm running a 4gb GPU trough its display port which as I read is the most resolution friendly input.

That's why I'm getting the feeling of wasted potential due to old habits.
