transferring files is so slow from laptop to external hard drive via usb3.0

i have WD 500gb external hard drive when i copy files from laptop the transfer speed is around 20s only .. it start over 100 then drops.

even after making format still slow

- laptop is working fine
sony vaio i7 4500U
4GB RAM

what model number is your WD External drive? you may be using USB 3.0 but if the system itself is USB 2.0 it will only go as fast as the slowest component connected.
I've been following this question to see if anyone answers. I have the same issue. But I can tell you..

1. HDD's have a small cache of memory that allows for initial bursts of faster transfer speeds.

2. After that the rest of the transfer will go much slower.

Now, why only 20MB/s (I think that's what you're saying) I don't know. I've experienced the same or similarly slow results and it seems much slower than what is expected.
