Hey! My pc has an i3 2120 and a GTX 1050ti. My PSU is 430W and 80+ bronze. I bought a prebuilt ( Lenovo Thinkcentre Edge 71 1577). This specific pc comes with an i5 2400s (with the s). I want to upgrade to i5 2400 (no ‘s’). I am getting that i5 for 50$. The mobo is ih61-m (h61 chipset),
The question is will everything be compatible? Will the PSU be sufficient? Will my mobo support the processor? Will i need a bios update (i don’t know anything about bios)?
I am planning to build a ryzen pc in 8 months because my dad is going to USA. PC stuff is extremely overpriced here. GTX 1050ti is 320$ new lol. Also i don’t play very demanding games. Most demanding game i play is gta V and i am happy with 1080p normal.

Solution
The chipset is same. So everything should work fine. 430w is sufficient for that build. BIOS update is not mandatory, but is highly recommended to the latest version. Rest should be all good.
There isn't much point in upgrading from a 2400s to a 2400. So why would buy the prebuilt when you could have simply upgraded the processor in your i3 PC? Did you need another PC? Was it really cheap? Cheaper than just buying a different CPU? Ryzen is good but not much better than Ivy bridge for gaming. So why not just get a 3770 in your current PC? If you plan on getting a cheap graphics card in the US I'm sorry to tell you it's not going to happen because prices are up right now due to miners. Miners are buying up all the cards and driving up the prices.

Hey theonerm2, thanks for the reply. I think i didn’t clear some stuff well. On the first line i said that i have i3 2120. I meant that this prebuilt system model has official support for i5 2400s but not for i5 2400. I actually want to upgrade from i3 2120 to i5 2400 NOT from i5 2400s to i5 2400.

The power supply? What model is it? 430 watt 80+ bronze doesn't say a lot about the quality of the PSU. Just because the chipset supports the processor doesn't mean the bios installed in the motherboard will accept it. Sometimes certain processor models will not be accepted by the bios and it will display a message, "unsupported processor detected." Or something similar to that. What you need to do is contact Lenovo and ask them if the processor you want to install will work. Or if the seller accepts returns you can try it yourself and see if it will work but be prepared to pay a 20% or more restocking fee if you do have to return the processor.

By default the h61 chipset and SandyBridge chips are perfectly compatible with each other... https://ark.intel.com/products/52209/Intel-Core-i5-2500-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_70-GHz
In case of an issue(if there is any at all), updating and tweaking the BIOS should be able to resolve it, unless the board or chip is broken.

I took a look at the specs on Lenovo's page and on your i3. All those CPUs are 65W or less. The i5 2400 is 95W, that's why I think there's a chance it won't work. Not because of the bios, or Lenovo not allowing it, but because the motherboard might be limited to 65W CPUs or less. An i5 2500T might be your best option for that computer.

edit: Or the 2400s

Thanks for the help hellfire, i guess i will have to see if it works on Wednesday. If not then I’ll buy a new board, they are like 20$ here anyways. I think lenovo chose the s models due to the 180w psu that the pc comes with.

Hey, I have the same PC as you and I'm wondering if you ever did upgrade and if it worked out. I'm thinking about doing similar upgrade (i3 2120 to i5 2500) and would like to know whether 95W CPU's work or not.

Hello, yes I did infact upgrade from i3 2120 to i5 2400. I did upgrade the bios beforehand through lenovo site. The bios were just program-type whichs means I installed them without a usb or anything. Just for notice, I had already changed the psu from the 180w one that came with the pc to a 430w antec earwatts one. Also, the stock cooler of i5 2400 didn’t fit in. For that I ordered a 10 bucks one and untill it arrived I used the i3 cooler. Only browse using the i3 cooler and don’t game until the new one comes.
So in short, yes 95w cpu’s do work (thinkcentre edge 71 1577 stock mobo)
Lastly, sorry for downvoting your question, I was trying to quote lol.

Thanks for the detailed response!

Thinkcentre Edge 71 1577 is the full model name, yeah.
I know about the BIOS, I've already upgraded the PSU and I'll replace the CPU cooler (hell I actually only wanted to replace the stock cooler because it's super loud, but curiosity got the better of me and it'll be a bigger upgrade :D ). It was only the board I was concerned about, I did some googling and everyone I've seen only replaced the CPU for 65W "S" models so I was a little worried.

And don't worry about downvotes, I appreciate the answer a lot more than votes/karma.
