Update:
I have since seen others ask the same question There looks to be one solution over 300, which is way out of what I want to pay.

Looks like that these are NVME drives I need an USB interface for.

I work on Lenovo and Macs at a large company. Sometimes I have to reinstall windows clean. In the past, I have slaved M2 hard drives with a USB to sata adapter to copy data back from the old drive with this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HR0PQKY
And it has worked fine on all previous generations except the Gen1 carbon. However, it will not work on the P50, P51s and the X1 Carbon Gen5. The drives are somehow different, maybe PCIE? The connectors look the same, but they do not have the same interface. And in the case of the P50 drives, when I plug them in, they cause a small chip on the adapter to get very hot, but I do not see the drive. Does anyone know of a case or adapter that will work via USB for these drives.

Exactly right. As I am buying this to make my job easier, and the company won't buy it, price is a big issue. Luckily, we are on the first part of a 3 year replacement cycle. Hopefully, by the time this becomes a major thing, there will be something less expensive
