Samsung Galaxy S4(ATT) no SIM Card issue

Hi I recently started using my S4 again as a back up phone after updating it to Lollipop. However when I insert a SIM card it does not appear to be working in the phone. When I take the SIM card out it says no SIM inserted. When I insert it, the no SIM error goes away yet calls do not work and in the network check it says no SIM available. Please help me solve this issue and figure out whether it is a hardware or software issue. Thank you

Some phone companies you need to call them and give them the IMEI number. They then enter the number and it should work. I'd call the company you get service through and see if they need to do something on their end. And yes, you need to make sure the phone is unlocked and can work on with that service.

The phone was unlocked and I tried using a simple mobile SIM but that didn't work so I even tried MINT but that doesn't work either.
