Constant problems with RAM disappearing on X58 motherboards

When I install RAM on X58 motherboards, if I max them out, the 3rd RAM bay becomes unavailable.

The boards can take 24 GB of DDR3, and so I end up with 16.

I have thus far always been able to eventually fix the problem by restarting the board enough times, and pushing down on the CPU HSF.

Sometimes this works fairly easily, sometimes I have to try repeatedly, give up, and come back to it.

Currently, I'm in the second situation, and worried that I may not get it.

Memtest86 shows that all three bays are populated.

The problem seems to come around when I change the CPU, which is what happened this time.

BIOS settings don't make any difference.

I've seen this on 3 or 4 boards.

I know that bent pins can cause this, and generally the older boards I'm working with have a few bent pins on the LGA socket that I am able to fix.

That said, I've never messed with the pins and fixed the problem that easily. Reseating the CPU usually causes the problem, rather than helping.

Tomorrow, rather than rebooting and pushing alone, I plan on getting some compressed air and alcohol and making sure the board and socket is clean. I'm not a systems engineer, but this seems like it could be caused by bad contact.

Meanwhile, I was hoping someone might have a better strategy. Every time I have to reseat, though im careful, there's a chance I cause a new problem. Also, I'm worried that all this pushing will eventually break the board.

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Max memory size refers to the maximum memory capacity supported by the processor, said by intel.
Populating RAM doesn't only depends on motherboard but also on CPU type. May be your CPU type doesn't support such max memory or some CPUs supports Single Channel Memory and some supports Dual Channel Memory etc..
Its not necessary that bent pins can cause this.
