What mid-range motherboard for i7 7700k?

Hi!

I'm currenlty looking to upgrade my CPU, and along with it my motherboard as my current one seems to only support 4th gen CPUs.

I was looking at https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS-VIII-HERO/ but I'm unsure if it will work or if it's any good. Also I live in Sweden where not all motherboards are available.

Intel 6th, 7th and 8th gen CPU and mobo requires DDR4 memory. Your 4th gen CPU and mobo used DDR3 memory. If you have not bought mobo and i7 7700K (4c/8t), then you should go for 8th gen i7 8700K since it has 6 cores and 12 threads. The price is only about $30 more. i7 8700K will only work with Z370 motherboard at this moment.

Upgrade to a 4th gen i7 if you can get one. It's not worth having to buy a new motherboard and ram to just upgrade to a 7700k. I'd upgrade to an 8700k if I were going to do that kind of upgrade. Also the motherboard you're looking at is a Z170 which supports 7700k but only with a bios update. I'd get a 6700K just to be on the safe side or get a z270 motherboard.

You'll have to excuse me because I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to mobo related things but are you saying I'll also have to upgrade my RAM, even if I were to buy an Z270?

What is the cpu you currently have and what is the motherboard?

Possibly a I7-4790K will be a sufficient and more cost effective boost.

Otherwise, a modern motherboard will require DDR4 ram.
And, a i5-8600K will be cheaper than a I7-7700k.
It will perform better in gaming, and about the same for multithreaded apps.
