Hi, I’ve been asked to upgrade a Q6600 based machine as a CAD workstation for hobby user, no gaming. Budget up to £1000, excluding case, PSU, DVD, HDD, Windows.

Key questions:
- I’ve proposed an i7-7700k based build. Is this overkill / diminishing returns vs AMD or i5?

- Is there any real world value in a Quadro P600 card vs onboard graphics?
I don’t want to spend £200 for no real benefit. Would consider gaming card if appropriate as a future upgrade when prices stablise.

- Would be nice to include a large screen in the budget, suggestions welcome.

- Would like to avoid spending for diminishing returns, if £500 would do for hobby use that would be a good result.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You also mentioned that the budget excludes PSU, HDD, DVD, Case and Windows. I assume you already have all of these parts so I did not include them. Just make sure your Case supports DVD drives and your PSU is of good quality and good wattage.

I have still included an SSD in the build because CAD likes it.

Why go with the 7700? The 8700 is out, and would be a better performer.

Please note that Ryzen has more cores, but I did some research and it turns out the Ryzen is not having too much of support within the CAD Softwares due to its multithreads.

GPU included is a 1050Ti, which will help in GPU Acceleration if required, and the monitor is 27" like you asked.
