Hi, I would like to ask if I buy a low end psu like corsair VS650 or maybe even a worse LC-power 600-700w and use it on a PC that uses about 100-200watts. Will there be less chances the PSU will fail rather than have it in a PC with 500w power draw?

Solution
Not necessarily, PSU's are at their highest efficiency at ~60% capacity as far as I know. Honestly you are better of buying a low wattage high quality PSU. Is saving $20 really worth burning your house down?

Agreed.

While your low load scenario seems like it would be being gentle the low quality parts really don't care about that. I want as much protection as I can. A low end PSU catastrophically fails due to a surge(surge protector was two years old and the owners failed to realize the red protected light had been off for a few months). What happens with that surge? Does the PSU give up the ghost and stop all of that or does the surge make it through to other components? I recently installed a 1080 Ti and I did purchase a new high quality PSU with a Gold efficiency rating. Whether I have a 750Ti or my current card it's the PSU that's truly the star and security detail of the show.

In short, chose the VS because it's not exactly bad but it's not great either.
