Hi all, I have a managed switch HP 1810G-8 (J9449A). Setting aside the switch and ports, can WS2012R2 duplicate the "managed" functions of the switch? I mean instead of having WS2012R2 and the managed switch, can WS2012R2 work with an unmanaged switch and still work the same? Thanks.

Not sure, full disclosure, about the full scope of your question. Details matter.

However will go out on a limb so to speak and answer "perhaps". The unmanaged switch will/should work.

But only to some certain unknown extent. The reason being that going from managed to unmanaged may result in some performance hit on your network.

There should be some reason(s) for have a managed switch to begin with.

Check the following link:

https://community.fs.com/blog/managed-vs-unmanaged-switch-which-one-can-satisfy-your-real-need.html

Per the link look at the differences between managed and unmanaged.

Determine if the existing managed switch is really doing anything for your network and operational environment.

What requirements exist that, if any, support the need for a managed switch?

Are you able to provide more details about your environment? Very sure that someone here can provide further insight or otherwise address the matter in more detail.

Unknown. You didn't say what you are trying to do. Are you trying to do link aggregation? VLANs? If either of those, then NO. If you want a single network connection to a single NIC in the server, then SURE. Anything else, you would have to describe.

Hi just an update. I rewired my messy network and placed the HP switch between my Windows 2012 R2 (also a gateway/router) and the rest of my network. Seems to work well. Learning on how to use the switch as I move along.
