Hello there!

I have two identical (non-kit!) Kingston HyperX Fury Red DDR3 1866 MHz 4 Gb sticks (HX318C10FR/4) installed on Asus Z97-K mobo together with Intel Core i7 4790 CPU. Planning to upgrade to total 16 gigs of RAM. My options are either purchasing another two similar non-kit sticks or a single dual-ranked 8 Gb stick (HX318C10FR/8), but after I tried to place one stick into the A1 slot and it conflicted with a heatsink fan sizewise, the latter one is the only option for me.

From my understanding, If I place 2 4 gigs sticks into the B1 and B2 slots of channel B, and 1 8 gig stick into the slot A2 of channel A, they should work together in dual channel. What I am asking is this worth it? Don't want to change my heatsink or pay for an overpriced 2x8 16 gigs kit.

Appreciate for your help!

Solution
With your CPU and chipset, Dual-channel does only a very small difference once activated, which you might hardly notice, if at all.
I'd just get the 8GB stick, as you already suggested. Look for the compatibility-page at your MoBo-company, though.
(If you had a Ryzen, or if you'd be using an onboard-graphics, this would be an entirely different case)
