This only started happening recently, where the monitor will start stuttering in game. Its consistent over all games where i will get this annoying micro stutter that gets worse and worse only in game, on desktop it is fine. Ive tried restarting (twice) and updating both the monitor drivers and my GPU drivers. What else do you guys suggest, or how did you fix this problem if you had it? Thank you!
It is a freesync monitor plugged in w/ DP and the specs are:
RX 480
R7 1700
16gb RAM
Windows 10
Latest drivers

Solution

Sometimes with freesync monitor and nvidia GPU (it happens) freesync can get enabled and cause problems like that.

Oops, youre right. It is a freesync monitor plugged in w/ DP and the specs are:

Ah you know what, it was on the desktop the stuttering was happening with freesync enabled with nvidia GPU. Somehow my monitor did that, it would go back to default settings somehow, maybe some button I pressed.

But as for OP's issue, I don't know. I would double check monitor and amd settings to make sure 144Hz is on and maybe try enabling/disabling freesync. Also, clean driver install if you haven't already tried.

Thanks for the reply. Disabling freesync worked. I wonder what could of caused this. I would like to have freesync on at some point so for me this is a band aid fix for now.

Im not familiar with Freesync (gsync here) but for you, my guess vsync might be adding to the cause.

Vsync wouldnt activate until refresh is exceeded but if turned off in your amd software it might be why.

Try play around with vsync settings with freesync enabled

Gamebar might be another thing to look at.

Windows key + G

Gamebar has a feature called fullscreen optimsation which can cause problems. Disabling gamebar will disable fullscreen optimisation, a feature that is a blend between borderless and fullscreen. Coupled this and freesync + vsync, worth a look into.
