So i ave 4gb of ram and an ap want 3gb of ram so it can properly run, i cant get 3 only 2 if that because 50% is used for operating system what can i do to allow more ram to be used for it, people have said to me something about how i can move all of that to my hard disk to free up ram but how can i do that? what settings should i have for intitial and max size on virtual memory to allow more ram to be used for the program. And Last question it says only 3.86gb useable how do i make it the whole 4 gb of ram usable because that kills me as well, i am thinkning of upgrading ram but currently got ddr3 4gb and i don't know if i am allowed to put another ddr3 8 gb is it even compatible? thanks all for your help if i get it

OK making more virtual memory on hdd will not reduce ram utilization first hand. Becs windows prioritize this when and which file it will keep in this v-memory of your hdd. Now say you have allocated 5gb vmemory in hdd and you have 4gb ram>windows can store up to 5gb (actually it is much less then 5) in virtual memory to free space in RAM. Similarly your head room will increse if you increse this 5gb. Which means in ram crisis windows can seek for more than 5 gb in virtual memory if you have allocated say 8GB but not more than that under any circumstances.
Now for the game, if it says 4gb as minimum then it means with minimum setting the max ram utilization for this game may be roughly close to 4gb. But believe me actually most of the...

Windows uses Page File to store some material that is being accessed in a less frequency in your HDD to free up RAM and to allocate more ram if it can for some ram intensive workload. It is being done in background and you only have control to increse this space in advanced system setting>performance tab. Google it to know how to increse/decrese page file size in windows.
Now lets a say you have only 4 gb and a program is designed to run in at least 4 gb ram. As soon as you start this program it will ask windows to give me 4gb. Now windows have only one choice to move as much files it can to free up ram for this program. Now since it can not entirely page all of its files from ram to hdd (the way programs are designed to run properly) it will try and fail and show you a message that not enough memory to run this app screen resulting program crash. The way windows works it is simply not possible. However there are third party software to fool windows and software to use HDD space as RAM space. But you program will be less responsive as the data transfer rate of even a nvme drive is no where close of a RAM.
So I would suggest you to increase the ram and don't waste your time try to find this type of stupid programs. Now have you tested your program to run on this pc with increase page file size? if not increase the page file size and try to run it to give it a try. All the best man....

Ive made the initial size larger, much larger in fact what difference would it make, ram still sits idle at 50%, and my laptop is compatible for SOME ram sticks to be added in but my parents nervous about getting it from America to Australia, they've never liked international shippings. So I'm trying to make do with what i got and at least get it to 3gb. I'm trying to play fortnite so there aren't any error messages even tho MINIMUM requirements is 4gb. SO it is asking for 4gb dedicated ram, never had a crash or anything for insufficient ram, i am just curious on what should i adjust the paging file to now to benefit me to have more ram or something, i have initial at 6114 and max 18496 as said by someone but i don't know what it means to have those numbers high so its like 6 gb and 18gb and to not have it as 3 gb and 6 gb what would the difference be, and I'm struggling to understand paging files and virtual memoery even after lots of research, so speak a little dumb language towards me coz I'm a little confused bout it all

Now for the game, if it says 4gb as minimum then it means with minimum setting the max ram utilization for this game may be roughly close to 4gb. But believe me actually most of the time it will not try to use even more than 3gb as per my experience. Since you have allocated 16GB vmem then while gaming windows can page upto this limit if the ram is getting filled upto say 3.8gb limit due to game utilization. So I think it will not be a big deal. But if the game tries to fill the ram then you will notice stuttring or sudden freeze during gaming due to this issue.
I would suggest to download msi afterburner or hwinfo and monitor your actual ram and page file/virtual memory utilization (page file is somewhat represents the virtual mem utilization) on screen during game play and check if it is being bottlenecked by ram or not. Sy if the ram avg use is less than 3.2gb then there is very less chance you need more ram. Google it how to on screen display the ram use.
I would recommend to stop some background apps that is running to free up some ram space. use razer game booster or something. But that is not that useful.
