Hello,
I just bought a Dell Optiplex 980 SFF. I also bought an i7-860. The system is without ram and i want to use 16GB of ram. I have read EVERYTHING all over the web (dell datasheets, forums, compatibilities) about ram but i am still not 100% sure of which ram will work with my system.
I have also have read Dell's datasheets and which brands are compatible with i7-860.
Although since many user over the web reported failures of 16gb usage with this model and since Dell have some history in ram incompatibilities i have a question if someone can answer please
A user confirms that he have used Corsair xms3 1333mhz 4x4gb total of 16gb in his system which is Dell Optiplex 980 (he does not say if it is the SFF model like mine) but i assume it is not. Probably it is the MT model (i have asked him but he does not reply)
I decided to go with this ram (Corsair xms3 1333mhz) that it is confirmed worked 16GB since my location is in Greece and Crucial or GSkill and other other branded models are very high priced here.

I have found 4 pieces of this ram but from different sources (in the price meet my needs)
a) 2x4gb of corsair Corsair xms3 1333mhz with part number CMX8GX3M2A1333C9
b) 1x4gb of corsair Corsair xms3 1333mhz with part number CMX16GX3M4A1333C9
c) 1x4gb of corsair Corsair xms3 1333mhz with part number CMX4GX3M1A1333C9

1 ) Do you believe that this 4x4GB of Corsair xms3 1333mhz will operate with my 980SFF model and give me 16GB of ram total?

Your help will be highly appreciated.

Noone can tell you for sure if that will work together for sure. The specs are the same, but they come from different sets so might have troubles working together because of that.Sticks that come in sets are tested for working together for sure. The only way to know for sure these four sticks will is trying.

Something to read about combining ram,

look at "Just Adding More Dram". Doesn't mean it won't work, but again it might give troubles.

With four sticks make sure to set Dram voltage to 1.65V if not already since one stick comes from a package of four where the tested values already where done at 1.65V,but that might have been for the fact this stick did came from a...

The best thing would be to look for sticks from one set,but that might be hard or not under your budget. The choice to try is really up to you,it might just work fine after what i warned for.:)
