So I'm building a NAS server for our home and I've ran into a problem. When I start the computer it stays on for a few seconds then it restarts over and over again. I have tried different RAM sticks but no luck. PCpartpicker says that the motherboard is incompatible with the CPU even tho it's the same socket?

No beep from the MB speaker.

Case, PSU and CPU fans spinns up.

Yeah, your h270 motherboard is only compatible with 6xxx and 7xxx Intel CPUs. Your i3-8100 requires a 300-series Intel motherboard. Right now only the z370 motherboards are available. The H and B-series versions of the 300 series motherboards are not yet available.

Thank you, you saved me from a lot of wasteful work! What do I look at except the socket so i know if it's compatable for future purchase?

You can look at the motherboard's CPU support list on the manufacturer's support page. Also, read the reviews on the CPU you plan to use as they will let you know about chipset requirements. You can always post a question here at Tom's as well. The coffee lake CPUs (Intel's 8xxx series) are particularly confusing because the socket has the same number of pins from previous-generation CPUs. When in doubt just post a question here on Tom's or search Tom's for others who have asked the same question.
