ok so a month or two ago i decided to upgrade my motherboard, CPU and ram and i went from:
Intel 2500k
8gb of DDR3 ram
GTX 780
random atx motherboard (cant remeber which one)
600W OCZ semi-modular power supply
2TB seagate HDD
250GB samsung 840EVO
after upgrade:
intel 8600k
Z370-A PRO LGA 1151 DDR4 ATX MOTHERBOARD
16GB (2X8GB) Corsair Vengeance lpx black
600W OCZ semi-modular power supply
gtx 780
2TB seagate HDD
250GB samsung 840EVO
so after the upgrade i was getting random reboots and for the first month i thought it was to do with the intel chipset security flaws, which were causing my friends pc's to also randomly reboot but 3-4 days ago i had a random reboot and i happened to look into my pc when this happened and i saw what appeared to be a spark come out of the GPU (see picture from where it came out off https://imgur.com/a/UxTpq ). This then happened again to day and its worth noting that this only happens when i am playing a game and sometimes it happens once a day but sometimes it doesn't occur for weeks. after i saw the spark for the first time i took the side of my case off in hope of getting a better view next time it happened and i saw and heard like a fizz (hard to explain) and i saw very faint sparks (due to the fact the case had light now that the side panel was off but i have no doubt if their was no light i would have seen it better)
- My cpu temperatures are fine (idle 22-30 degrees and while full load 60-70). I also checked the last recorded temp in my logs before each reboot and didn't find any unusually high temps.
- The PSU and GPU both are the oldest components in the PC so i am quite sure either the PSU or GPU are causing the problem although i have no way of knowing which as i have no spare components to test them both. ( don't want to spend allot of money on a gpu if it then turns out to be the PSU causing the issue and visa versa)
- I've tried using different wall sockets and even at a different house and the issue still occurs.
- Cleaned all the dust out of the PC.
- Could it be to do with my new motherboard and cpu? i wasnt getting this problem before i did the upgrade. Could this happen when not enough power is provided by my PSU for the new hardware?
- do i put my computer at risk by continuing to use it?
any help would be greatly appreciated
