Would upgradingfrom GTX 960 to GTX 980 be reasonable in 2018 with crazy GPU prices?

Hey Everyone,

Current Setup: i5 3570k
stock gtx 960
thermaltake purepower 680w power supply (you'll see why this is important)

I found a used gtx 980 in excellent condition for $250. My power supply only has two 6 pin connectors and is probably close to 15 years old so I'm planning to replace it if I get the 980 since it requires two 8 pin connectors. While I've never had the problems with the current power supply, I would want to make sure if it goes out, it doesnt fry up anything else with it.

Currently with the market prices I can't even get a decent gtx 1060 6gb for a reasonable price. Would you recommend proceeding with the purchase of gtx 980 or just waiting for something new?

I've heard the rumors about the new Ampere/Turing architecture, but those sources haven't been confirmed by NVIDIA. I also have a 144hz freesync monitor, but AMD prices are even worse right now. I would prefer an AMD card solely to support the adaptive sync feature in the monitor, other than that, NVIDIA has always been a winner in benchmarks I've reviewed.

I mostly play cs go, fortnite, a few AAA titles. I'm also trying to get into PUBG. Do you think it's worth the switch?

Thanks for your help.

Solution
A GTX 980 should be, performance-wise, roughly equal to, or maybe have a bit of an edge over, the GTX 1060.

And, in terms of bang for buck, definitely a good deal in today's market.

I agree with King_V, the GTX 980 is a good upgrade BUT there is also a GTX 1060 which is actually cheaper and better than the GTX 980.
The cheapest unused newly GTX 1060 what i could find is $209. This is a 3GB version.
The 6GB version is $269.

The 3GB 1060, beyond obviously having less memory, is slightly cut down from the 6GB version of the 1060. There are some few cases where the 1050Ti (4GB) outperforms the 1060 3GB due the lesser memory and slightly cut down GPU.

The hierarchy chart puts the 980 at a tier above the 1060. Further, where'd you find those prices
Everyplace I've seen, the 1060 is the victim of the same price inflation as the higher cards.

In any case, it seems the 980 is still likely to have the performance edge, if the hierarchy chart is accurate.
