I've been having problem with my uncle's laptop:
Alienware 15 R1
Nvidia 970m
2.9 GHz Intel Core i5-4210 CPU
8GB DDR3
1TB SSHD
The laptop had first a problem with the battery where it wouldn't turn on. I opened the laptop and reseated the battery which fixed the problem. Few days later the laptop just shut down and wouldn't turn on.
I did few tests to try and fix it:
1. I took of the battery, unplugged the laptop charger and held down the power button for 30 secs to drain any power left in it. Then I put back the battery and plugged the power cord, no results achieved. No signs of life only a burning smell from the power cord.
2.From the burning smell, I thought it could be either the laptop charger, dc incable or motherboard. I tried a different laptop charger same results burning smell from the charger and dc incable. I removed the battery completely trying to turn it on only with the laptop charger only ending up with same result burning smell.
3. I tried changing the dc incable hoping that was the problem but again ended up with same result burning smell.

After trying that I looked at the motherboard carefully and didn't see any signs of burning on it. So is it faulty motherboard like I am thinking, or could it be something else that can potentially fixed?

Something is shorting but where exactly it's hard to say. I would say yes likely your mobo or the power jack is having an issue, and this won't be easily fixable by you. You need to take this in to see if the port can be changed or if the mobo is affected as well or is just shutting down in order to prevent damage. Don't plug in anymore, to limit the damage, and warn the people wherever you're taking it for fixing about the burning smell.
