Athlon II X4 or FX 6300

I know, these 2 procies are old. I just have a quick question to you guys. Currently I have the athlon ii x4 640, 8gb ram, 4gb r9 380. It was given by my brother to me. But I feel like the athlon isnt able to push the r9. Should I change it to the fx 6300 atleast? TIA. By the way, I dont have enough budgey to get mu own rig right now, im broke lol

FX 6300 is faster, although not by much. It will improve your FPS, though; r9 380 is certainly bottlenecked by your current CPU., and this will still be the case with FX6300 to a cretain extent, depending on the game.

From what little info there is, the Athlon x4 640 is an AM3 socket CPU; the FX-6300 is an AM3+ CPU. Budget-wise it may depend on your motherboard.

What is your MB ??? It needs to be AM3+ for FX processors. Athlon II requires only AM3 socket although it may work on AM2+ MBs.

I got an Asus AM3+ motherboard, i guess fx would work. So I'll go for the FX then?

In that case yes, FX 6300 would be better and not only because 2 more cores but also larger cache and overall more modern processor. Another option would be a Phenom II x6 1100T with just a bit lower performance but may find it for cheaper.

Right, they are just about neck to neck performance wise with phenom being even a bit better than older FX 6100.
