Hello,

I would like to ask an opinion from you guys to solve an issue of failing PSU.

I have built a small factor size PC containing the following components:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 Six Core 1600 3.60GHz
CPU cooler: Cryorig C7 Top Flow CPU heatsink
MB: ASRock Mini-ITX Motherboard - AB350
SDD: Kensington 240GB
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 SC ACX 3.0 Black Edition 8GB GDDR5

PSU: Silverstone Strider SFX 600W Fully Modular '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply

So what happened is that after building my PC and running it for 2 days my PSU failed. The System just shutdown and would not power up again.

So what I did to check what is happening: I unplugged everything, waited 10 minutes plugged it again and no change. The system would not power up.

I have an OLD ATX Corsair 850W semi-modular PSU that I used for over 6 years with my old rig. I used this to power the system. The result was that everything works fine, no shutdowns.

So from this test I spoke with the shop and RMA the PSU with a the same model. I assume dthe PSU was faulty.

After installing the new PSU the same problem occured. I RMA the PSU for a Corsair 600W SFX modular PSU this time, awaiting the delivery now.

What is happening? Why is this happening? Its obviously the silverstone SFX PSU issue because my old corsair ATX PSU works just fine.

I hope the new SFX corsair PSU will work fine but what do you guys think?

I will be taking my rig along with the new PSU to a local pc repair place I used before to have them check it out (onc ethe new PSU arrives in the next 4-5 days).

But in the meantime it is bugging me to find out why.

Thank you,

Milo

Hello,

Just to update on this topic.

I have finally got a replacement Corsair SF600 PSU and its been running fine without any problems!

Silverstone PSU were just bad and could not handle the system for some reason.

Thanks!

It could be just bad luck. Try buying a quality PSU like a SeaSonic this time. Also, look for units with a long warranty, because they usually have a better build quality. Some Corsair units were/are made by SeaSonic. Better to get the PSU from the source than buy from a company that just slaps a sticker on it. They can have multiple suppliers. What are the model numbers for the PSUs. Do you have a volt/multi meter to measure the voltage at your outlet? Cheap power supplies can have problems operating if source voltage is too low or too high.

Hello goldstone77!

The company I got it from is overclockers.co.uk so they are legit.

Model number is: SST-SX600-G

Its totally unreal. its a small itx motherboard, I could not plug anything incorrectly plus my old PSU works just fine. There arent any loose cables, everything is plugged in where its supposed to. So it must just be the model of the PSU.

Unfortunately no I do not have voltage meter. I used the same source for my old pc for years.

How long is the warranty on that PSU? If it's only 1 year stay away from those unit, because the manufacture doesn't have any faith in the unit for long term use. Look for 5 year or better. It's worth buy a quality power supply. Biggest complaint was with there capacitors.

Build Quality (20% of the final score) - a full point will come off immediately for capacitors. That's the maximum my scoring system allows, because some of the capacitors in here are total nonsense that don't belong in a unit trying to push the limits of power output in a small space. Su'scon? Really? Thanks, but no thanks. Otherwise, I have no other complaints against the build quality because I found no other... well... on second thought, I don't care for the lack of cooling on the secondary side. I'll take half a point for that too. But no more than that, because we did get this thing to run full power at forty-two degrees. 8.5.

Apparently its 3 years Warranty.

So these Su'scons capacitors are bad? Could be the reason why the PSU died twice?

I heard corsair has good quality Japanese capacitors.

I would choose SeaSonic over corsair most of the time. But corsair does make some good unit.

I see you don't have many choices really with the 170W 1070. Honestly, you probably picked the best power supply with the power you need. You might want to consider upgrading the case in the future, you could get away with a far cheaper power PSU, and have more options.
