CPU keeps overheating once every 2-3 minutes.

Hello people,

I've recently been having issues with my CPU. Specs are: AMD-FX 8350, GTX 1070, 16 GB of RAM, ASUS M5A78L-M PLUS/USB3 (Motherboard)

I've been having this issue since the repair of my Computer. Somehow my mainboard got destroyed and took my GTX 1070 down with it (I didn't have any overheating problems before the fix). Since it has been fixed my CPU overheats whilst I'm playing and it jumps to around 74 degrees. It stays there for a few seconds and drops back to normal (My FPS goes from 120-150 down to 30 or 40 during that time). Alot of people told me the problem might be because my Thermal Paste dried out or something during the repair of my Computer since it's around 2 years old. I just wanted to ask here to make sure. I am fairly certain it isn't a bottleneck because I had the same setup before the repair and wasn't having any issues whatsoever.

Check if your CPU is doing alot of work, press control+shift+escape, then it opens your task manager, here you can see how much your CPU is working, and what program is making it work so much.

Sorry for my bad english.

Indeed, what bfcallan said. Clean off old thermal paste and reapply a thin line of paste down the middle of the CPU and ensure you reseat the heatsink firmly. That should sort you out.

I've replaced the thermal paste but the problem is still there. My CPU doesn't overheat anymore though. Not sure what the problem is this time

If you've had the problem since repair, I'd go back and tell them what's happened. Your repair should still be under some kind of warranty if you haven't left it for a while, so asking won't hurt at all.

Just used some google-fu and found this for you to help put your mind at ease regarding temp spikes on your CPU - http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2158556/amd-8350-temperature-spiking-issue.html - and this - https://www.reddit.com/r/overclocking/comments/4wxlmh/fx8350_temp_spikes_safe/ -

It appears that the temperature spikes are a known thing that happens with your CPU, completely normal. So replacing the thermal paste certainly helped and you're not overheating now which is good. It allegedly starts to throttle at 70c which would explain your FPS drops, so work your voltage/clocks under 70c and see if that helps. You could replace the cooler with a higher tier cooler to reduce temps. But if you can't, it's better to have constant stability than a big overclock that drops every few minutes.

Given that your CPU is a bit older now, you have to appreciate that it has degraded overtime so clocks you had before may not perform to the level you had previously.

Hope this helps dude, let us know what happens.

I now have looked into the problem, and when I get these FPS Drops my CPU Temperature goes DOWN (from like 60 to 65 ALWAYS down to 40-41), same with my Ram Speed (from like 4000 to 800) and my Processor tact rate (from like 1600 down to 800). Im not sure what causes these problems.

When I re-applied the thermal paste I spread it out with a razor blade and put the cooler back on (I removed the old thermal paste of course)

I looked at those CPU Core Settings, I did not find CPU Clock Ratio but I found CPU Frequency (200 - 550MHz) and CPU Ratio (x4.0 - 800Mhz to x11.0 - 2200MHz), which ones should I change and to what

Don't change any of those settings, that's for overclocking. I thought your motherboard was newer. Try to find "Cool & Quiet" setting in BIOS, if it's there then disable it.

Did you lock the CPU cooler? If you applied too much thermal paste it might be the cause of high temperatures. You should clean the CPU cooler, get the fan off the heatsink and clean both. Also is worth to clean all the other fans in your case for better air flow, as you said the PC is 2 years old so I guess is dusty. Re-apply the thermal paste make sure that it's a thin layer like rizzla, also what thermal paste are you using? MX-4 is good for FX CPU's.
Best solution would be if you get an aftermarket CPU cooler as this CPU runs hot no matter what.

You can download software like SpeedFan and set your fan speed to 100%. There's loads of tutorials on Youtube on how to configure this software.

We used MX4 as thermal paste, before applying it we cleaned the cooler and the fan. We even made it as thin as possible with a razor blade. I'll be looking into that "Cool & Quiet" thing. If that doesn't help I guess I'll be getting a new cooler. Can you prefer me any Coolers that are good with FX CPU's?
