Hi, the computer which is running linux Mint 18.3 suddenly switches off especially when running a game that makes demands on the graphics card. If I play such a game the fans sound loud and after not very long the computer just switches off in an instant without any shut down process.

I have tried two graphics cards and got the same result. I have even installed windows and got the same result. So I think it must be hardware, but I could be wrong.

Even if I'm not playing a game the system will eventually switch off for no apparent reason it just takes longer to happen.

Any suggestions as to what might be the problem would be very welcome.

I am using Linux Mint 18.3 I have a Gigabyte A320M-HD2 motherboard, X4 950 CPU, 4Gb of memory a 500 watt power supply, and an ASUS R7 250 graphics card. I have just assembled the PC.
Any ideas very welcome.

Regards Steve

Hi, It's an CIT Active 85 500w 36A power supply. It says it's 80 plus bronze. Up until I put it in this computer it was using one of the 2x 4 pin 12v power supply plugs. On this motherboard I'm using both 4 pin plugs in an 8 pin socket.

Aerocool: Generally no.
Corsair: Yes, though the VS series and the CX series with the green letters are mediocre at best.

There's no guarantee that the PSU is directly causing the problem here. But it's very hard to diagnose issues like these with a garbage PSU in the mix (and CIT is one of the notorious bottom-barrel brands).
