so i wanna talk about a a problem that i had and maybe discuss a solution for it.

me and my two house mates are pc gamers and former smokers we decided to switch to vaping since its less harmful than cigarettes.

after 3 months one of my friends tells me his screen is not detecting anything when he turns his pc on at first i thought it was a RAM issue since hes been using them for 4 years or so but after opening the case i found out that his GPU is dead (amd r9 280x).

i did not what caused this, i checked his electricity outlet his PSU everything seemed fine but for a gpu to suddenly die there has to be something so i suspected that the humidity from the vapor was the issue but i couldn't prove it so we forgot all about that.

2 months later my other friend has the same issue but this time i opened his case to find some moist on his GPU i looked around some more and found oil/moist on all his fans i figured the moist stacked on the top fan to finally drop on the gpu causing the issue ( i found moist on the gpu directly under the top fan).

so two gpus dead and i had just purchased a 1080 ti last month i just ran to my PC shut it down
carefully opened the case to find that i had the same exact problem the only thing that saved my GPU was that it had a back plate which had some moist on it. also all my fans had some moist as well.

so now what is the solution for this problem?? its hard to stop vaping when im using my PC i have been smoking for years while using my pc so this is a deal breaker for me and i do not want to go back to smoking.

so does anyone have any idea to prevent this from happening in the future??

also to those vaping near their PCs go and check before u get a dead gpu or possibly something worse.

Well moisture and smoke kill computers. So the only way to avoid this is to remove the pc from the room or not vape/smoke near the computer.

I switched to ecigs 6 years ago and have the same system, fortunately never encountered any problem. I'm pretty much a lightweight on the ejiuce as I only use 30ml every 2 months. My system is under a desk and I'm guessing the vapor lands mostly on the top of my desk, although I've never noticed any type of residue.

You got lucky. Working as a tech for several years, nothing kills a PC quite like tar. If you cleaned it often it probably wasn't an issue, but otherwise you got lucky.

@OP: Given the chemical composition of that stuff, I don't think it'd be a huge problem, but even if it was, just make sure you're cleaning the system frequently.

i do clean my pc every 5 months so i guess thats why smoking was not an issue for me.

but when vaping if i dont clean every month i may lose a hardware component.

isnt there a way around that?? a precaution ??

i am an IT student so most of my time is spent on PC.

Good room ventilation will remove most smoke effects. I often call computers "Hoover" because they are just as good at dust and other stuff collecting as vacuum cleaners with added bonus of high frequencies acting as static electricity. Got some computers used in a Swiss hospital and even they had dust inside.

but the problem now is the humidity of vapor in a room what can i do to prevent that from gathering in my fans or hardware.

that is a good idea i just checked online and found a few affordable dehumidifiers il purchase one next week.

i know this may sound funny but what if i also added SilicaGelly at the bottom of my case?

that just came to me and if you think it would work i guess il go with that along with a dehumidifier.

thanks alot.

Another thing that works really well are really fine mesh dust filters since those also trap moisture. Having an open case top that has fans blowing air outwards is also a huge help due to them helping to get the hot water vapor out.
