Green light when switching pc on, no display, and fans won't turn on

A few months ago I was given a PC by a friend. It was missing a graphics card, so I waited and got one before using it, as I want to use it for playing video games. After finally receiving and putting a new graphics card in, I turned it on, and I got nothing. When switching the power switch on a green light turns on inside the PC, but nothing shows up on the screen, and the fans won't start spinning. I'm VERY new to the world of computers, and would really appreciate some help!

Well 500w PSU is ample for a GT 710 and it doesn't need any auxiliary power direct from the PSU either, so neither of the possibilities I mentioned are relevant.

May be you need to select "PCI Express" instead of the default "integrated/on-board" in the BIOS settings like I had to do when I bought a GPU for my relatively old system? (obviously you'll need to connect monitor to integrated graphics port in order to see/modify BIOS settings).
Full system specs required, including, crucially, PSU make & model and GPU make & model please.

My initial suspicion is that the existing PSU is not able to power the system with that GPU you bought. Pull the GPU out & see if the PC works okay.

Another possibility (also PSU-related) is that the new GPU requires auxiliary power via 6-pin or 8-pin connectors which you may have overlooked.

Apologies, didn't realize that would be relevant information, mistake on my part.

Motherboard is an ASUS M5A97 LE 2.0

GPU, I'm assuming that's the graphics card, is a GEFORCE GT 710

PSU is a Thermaltake SMART 500w

Hope this info helps!
