Is it possible to create a "LAN" over the internet...

Ok basically what I need to do is I'm moving out to university in a few months but I want to have an ability to play with my sister in our LAN server... I tried setting up a proper server but it does not work so I'm thinking of using some software to join the computers together in a LAN style network so that we can continue playing together with her at home and me at uni. I know my thread is a bit vague but I'm very good with computers on the software level but never really played with networks that much. Thanks for any advice

You can also use a tunneling app like logmein hamachi or tunngle that will able to give you lan play just install on both PCs it’s pretty painless

Thank you all for your help. As Hamachi is already installed on both computers I will try this first, I never really knew what Hamachi's capabilities were until now as I used it when I was like 13 to play minecraft with my mates and not used it since until now it seems.
