Okay so I have a 2 bay synology now with 2x 4tb drives. I am purchasing a Ds418 and a 12TB drive. Can I still use the 2x 4TB drives in the DS48 and if so how and what ramifications on storage? Will be used as Plex server. Thanks

Solution
You should be able to add the 4TB drives to the Synology DS418 and then add the 12TB drive as expanded storage as long as they're compatible with the DS418. Here is a Synology Knowledge Base article on the process: Add a Drive to Expand Storage Capacity

As far as the ramifications to the storage, that depends on how you're laying out the storage. Here is the Synology RAID Calculator Tool which can come in extremely handy in determining storage layouts in a NAS or RAID array.

Right now the smaller drives are in a 2 bay NAS loaded with videos. Would I have to lose the data in order to move them to the 4 bay? Just wondering what the best migration path would be. Thanks.

The migration process is detailed here: How to Migrate Between Synology NAS.
