Hi,

i have a thermal controlled fan at my PSU. Should it spin even on PC start or will it activate only when there is high temperature? My PSU model is SP-B700.

Thanks.

Unlikely to cause damage. MAYBE malfunctions like freezing up. But first, watch the PSU fan and see whether it does come on as the unit warms up, or never does.

Among PSU's with self-controlled cooling fans, I have seen two types. One runs the fan most of the time, from slow to fast, depending on temperature which is determined by system workload. The other actually keeps the fan off completely until the PSU gets to 30% to 40% of its capacity; THEN it gets warm enough to start the fan slow, and will speed up more if needed. I do not know which type yours is - the website does not say.

Don't worry too much. First of all, the only unit in any danger of overheating from poor performance of the fan INSIDE the PSU is the PSU itself. I am assuming that you do have other fans to ventilate the computer case. But by far the most likely scenario is that the PSU fan system WILL operate as designed and cool the PSU as it needs. The only indication of trouble would be if you find that it NEVER comes on, even when you do a long session of heavy work.
